Brings the Music of Milton Nascimento
A passion for, and a fresh take on, the origins of Brazilian Music, is what initially brought the six musicians from the band Azul together in the autumn of 2013. Milton Nascimento’s music takes centre stage. The contrasting disciplines that fuse in the band also deliver a remarkable sound; Brazilian music meets Chamber Music.
Ana Beck’s warm voice harmonizes exquisitely with the veiled tones of Angelo Verploegen’s flugelhorn and the sensual moods of Jorien Muste’s violin. Add to this the inventive creativity of pianist Ed Baatsen, bassist Henk de Ligt and percussionist Michael de Miranda and the setting is complete. The sound of the double bass combined with the violin, forms an exceptional basis for the remarkable melodies from Nascimento’s music.
In addition to this, the rhythmic interaction in the challenging compositions offers a thrilling riposte to the searching solos from the piano and the flugelhorn.
The singer/songwriter Milton Nascimento is regarded as one of the Icons of Brazilian Music. Raised in the area of Minas Gerais, his compositions lean towards Brazilian folk, classical music and modern jazz. The elaborate rhythmical structure, the exceptional harmonies and the asymmetrical melodies are all characteristic of his music. Henk de Ligt has written new arrangements of Nascimento’s compositions especially for this project. While naturally respecting the original work, the new arrangements exhaustively explore the depths of the specific sound of their ensemble.
